As a kid I wouldn't have hesitated to buy this hat, as a teenager I would have actively avoided it but as my hair gets thinner my love for hats has grown again. Everything comes full circle they say. The Scala Classico Crushable Outback Hat is a classic...with a long name.

The first time I saw this hat was actually up at our cabin. My cousin was wearing it and promptly took the hat off and set it on the couch for a demonstration. He turned around and sat right on top of it. Then jumped up and popped it right back into shape. I was impressed as any rational human would be but forgot about it after a few days. My dad however was more than a little amazed and purchased one a few months later. Of course this gave me the chance to try it on and I immediately ordered one too.

Comfort

This hat is one of the lightest and most comfortable hats I have ever owned. You don't even really notice it on your head. When we were in Canada for a fishing trip I pretty much had it on for a week straight and it felt odd to take it off. While I didn't sleep it in I suppose I could have since it is crushable. It is made out of wool felt so it is also able to absorb some light rain without getting you wet and it dries fairly quickly too. While wool breaths well the black hat does get warm in the sun so consider that when picking your color.

Quality

I personally don't think there is any competitor at this price point. You can find these hats between about $35-$60 which has to be considered when talking about quality. Bang for your buck is high. Mine has held up really well though I wouldn't say I abuse it by smashing it for every person that asks me about it like my cousin, but his looked brand new still. I have also read that you need to be careful crushing it if it is wet as it can alter the shape as it dries. Wool felt is durable and the construction is solid.

Looks

I do get compliments on this hat when I wear it though I have to be honest I didn't buy it to make a fashion statement. I wear it primarily when hiking, fishing and hanging out outside. It comes with some magical feathers which I removed immediately. I have seen a few folks add other fancy items in their place though it already commands enough attention when you wear this hat to Costco. My wife did make fun of me when I got it but now she happily steals it from me. There is a slight curve to the hat up and over your ears which improves the looks in my opinion. My dad's actually has a version with a smaller brim but I like the outback as it protects your face a little more though I am clearly burned from sunlight reflecting off the water which hats can't help with.
